Warriors Preparing for Battle

Summer is all about relaxing, hanging out friends, going on vacation with family, and having time to yourself. This, however, is not the case for the football players of West High School. Since June, these warriors have been training for the upcoming football season.

During the 2012-2013 school year, the team executed excellent performances and came extremely close to receiving the title of CIF Champions. According to Luke Shim (12), a West High varsity football player, the team beat Mira Costa in order to advance to the quarter finals. “We won the quarter finals against St. Joseph High School and the semi-finals against Atascadero High School to go to the finals against Palos Verdes High School.” Unfortunately, the team lost: Palos Verdes High School with a score of 35 and West High School with a score of 14.

Making it all the way to the CIF finals last season was a huge accomplishment for the team. Hoping to advance onto the CIF finals once again, all of the football players that are a part of the upcoming season have been consistently practicing throughout the summer. Plenty of warriors, both on and off the team, believe that the chances of having another good football season are good. Rebecca Ahn (12) states, “Considering last year’s performance, I think the pack of players will go pretty far again this year, especially because the upcoming seniors are a strong group of people.” Because the team started practicing so early, Ahn believes that all of the players’ hard work and effort will pay off and really show throughout this year’s season. Unlike Ahn, Ivan Yi (10) has a more pessimistic perspective concerning the upcoming season. Yi stated, “Since the seniors [of 2013] are gone I don’t think the team will make it as far as they did last season.”

Even though opinions differ from one West High student to another, one thing is certain: the football players have been training long and hard all summer, preparing to dominate in their next season and are anxious to step back onto the battlefield.
