With Thanksgiving just around the corner, finding the perfect dessert to serve to those around your dinner table is always a challenge. However, classics never go out of style. To add a sugary twist to a classic, delicious dessert, try out these easy to make Baked Apple Pie Dumplings.

INGREDIENTS

2 apples

3 tablespoons of white sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

½ teaspoon cornstarch

2 sheets of puff pastry

1 egg white beaten

Cider Sauce

1 cup apple cider

1 cup water

1 cup sugar

½ teaspoon cinnamon

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon lemon juice

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat your oven to 400˚F.
  2. Peel both apples, removing all skin and stems. Split the apples in half to form a top and bottom piece. Use a melon baller to remove the core, without hitting the bottom. Continue to use the melon baller to carve out the inside of the apple. Put the small pieces of apple to the side.
  3. In a bowl, mix the apple pieces with the cornstarch, butter, cinnamon and sugar. Stir until the pieces are evenly coated.
  4. Place the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Spread pastry with a rolling pin to measure roughly 9×14 inches. Cut the pastry into two 6-7 inch circles by using a saucepan. Set aside.
  5. Fill the hollowed-out core of the apples with  apple mixture from earlier. Place each filled apple in the middle of a round piece of pastry. Apply a light wash of egg white to the rim of the pastry and fold toward the center over the apple, crimping the pastry until ends meet over the apple. Continue until all the edges have been brought together. Use your hands to hold the shape of the dumpling. Once shaped, place more egg white on top of the dumpling. Use a knife to cut a small vent into the top of each dumpling.
  6. Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and crispy.

CIDER SAUCE DIRECTIONS

  1. Combine water, apple cider, sugar, and cinnamon in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Boil for 15 minutes, until the sauce becomes thick.
  2. Remove from heat and mix 2 tablespoons of butter and lemon juice.
  3. Serve by pouring sauce over dumplings. If you want, you can top it off with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
