Rising Stars Bring Grease To Life

A classic “good girl meets bad boy” story set to the rhythm of a 1950s high school musical, blending catchy songs with playful, slightly raunchy humor. Grease remains one of the most iconic musicals of all time, with numerous pop culture references since its release. It’s only fitting that West High’s Play production finally brings the legendary story to their stage. This year’s leads, Marcus Borda (10) and Camilla Guzman (10), shared how they prepared for the classic roles of love-struck teens, Danny Zuko and Sandy Debrowski, who experience the ups and downs of high school alongside friends.

Borda explained that he prepared for his role by rewatching footage from Broadway shows and the 1978 movie to study Danny’s character since “[he] personally found it difficult to connect with Danny.” He admitted that one of the hardest parts for him was understanding Danny’s morals since they contrast sharply with his own. Guzman shared similar sentiments for her own character, expressing that “the hardest part for me was Sandy’s growth through the show. Having to go from sweet and shy to the confident girl she was all along was something I worked on for a while.” She added that part of the challenge was staying true to the original character, while still making it her own: “I was so excited to be portraying her, but I was also really nervous.”

To cope with the anxiety that came with the role, Guzman and Borda found comfort in the casting community: “Realizing that my other cast mates had felt the same way helped me realize that [being nervous] is a universal feeling when playing roles,” Guzman explained.   Their anxiety is entirely valid; after all, they are sophomores playing lead roles for the first time in a school production. “I mean, regardless of my class, I feel the pressure. But as a sophomore, it feels like a chance to prove myself and show what I can do,” Borda affirmed.

Their lead roles not only pushed Borda and Guzman to the limit acting-wise, but also offered a chance to grow closer as friends. The co-actors were already close companions before Grease, which made acting in some of the intimate scenes as a young, teenage couple less awkward. “[Camilla is] such an incredible actress and scene partner, so it’s not difficult to be able to play off of each other,” Borda explained. Borda’s appreciation for his co-actor was mirrored by Guzman, who added, “Marcus has been the best! He’s such a talented actor and such a fun person to be around.” The two spoke highly of each other and acknowledged each other’s cooperation, which further helped them immerse themselves in character.

Overall, West High’s production of Grease is more than just a high school remake of a beloved musical—it showcases the dedication and growth of its student performers. Through their consistent after-school practices, script revisions, and hard work, the cast has embraced the challenges of coming into character and done all in their power to breathe life into the school play. As the curtain rises, their performances promise to capture the charm, energy, and heart of the students who bring Grease to life.
