West High Esports Team Wins State Championship After Undefeated Season

February 23, 2023

With an undefeated streak and state championship victory, West High’s Esports team has made a huge splash this fall season. With Esports now a recognized high school sport complete with a CIF championship, West Esports competed fiercely to earn their No. 1 ranking in California. Their many efforts were fruitful, resulting in this distinguished win.

West Esports is not just a team but an organization made up of players, captains, coaches, content creators, and social media managers. Team practices are held Mondays through Wednesdays to practice games such as League of Legends and Super Smash Brothers. These games are not just fun but are also helpful for students in other ways. Club adviser Ms. Kim mentioned that “Esports is now getting recognized everywhere as an official sport because there is a teamwork aspect to it.” They have even live-streamed their games on Twitch with students, casters, and analysts, adding to their recognition. Past studies have revealed that gamers have skills that would be difficult to develop in other areas, such as situational awareness. Yudai Shimizu (12), the caster for the team, agreed and added that the sport “help[s] with critical thinking and making decisions very fast.”

The reason behind the team’s bond and the achievement of winning the State Championships were the similarities in members’ interests and their dedication. Each member has a similar passion towards video games and are committed to work hard as a group. To top off the extraordinary win, the team did a live viewing for the grand finals on campus, bringing home a win as many of their classmates watched on.

This was a successful year for the new and thriving Esports club. With their numerous victories, they are planning to start a JV team at West High to add more games such as Rocket League for the upcoming seasons.

As West Esports looks ahead to their spring season, their determination to win will help them bring home more victories.
