In their second league game, West High Girls’ Volleyball team defeated last year’s league champions, South High Spartans, on Friday, September 29. The Warriors and Spartans competed for five matches, but in the end, the Warriors came out with the win by a score of 3-2.

 The first set proved difficult for West. For the first half of the set, South took the lead with West not able sideout. Towards the end, West managed to close the gap between scores despite South beating West by a score of 25-22.

   In the second match, Warriors began the game with an eight-point lead. As West neared the twenties, South went on a five-point run, leading to another close and intense game. Despite South catching up to West, West never gave up the lead. Jackie Lacroix (10) stepped in at the last few points and aced her opponents three times.

  Lacroix excitedly stated, “I was really excited to be on the court. I really wanted to win that game because we were really close to catching South.”

  West ultimately won the set with a score of 25-18.

   The Warriors win was met with another loss in the third set as Spartans went on a serving and hitting streak. Spartans pulled off an early lead, which they kept up for the entire set, prompting their win of 25-17.

  At this point, the game was 2-1 with Spartans in the lead. However, West managed to come back and tie the game up at 2-2. West kept the lead from the beginning of the set, however, the score gap started to close in the middle of the set. Then Kendall Fedore (12) stepped in and managed to widen this gap as she hit straight down the line, garnering multiple kills.

  “It’s hard to kill a ball straight down the line and it’s also hard to pass a ball that’s coming from the line. That’s why I focus on hitting straight during practice so that I can get the kills that I want during the game,” said Fedore.

  The fifth match determined who would win the entire game. In the end, West won the tiebreaker game by 15-9. Both the outside hitter, Kristen Strauss (11), and opposite hitter, Jacy Moore (12), shined as Strauss’s immediate kill was followed by Moore’s impressive block straight down the opponent’s side, resulting in game point.

  The game was a huge milestone for Warriors as Spartans are one of the top competitors for girls’ volleyball in the Pioneer League. This is the first time in awhile that girls’ volleyball has come out with a win against South.

  Setter Lauryn Tham (11) said, “We were more vocal and aggressive today. We really wanted it. And it paid off.”

  The Warriors are currently in the lead for the league title at 2-0, but they still have a long way to go. West will have their third league game at home against Leuzinger High Olympians on Wednesday, October 4. Varsity will start at 3 with JV and Frosh following after. Come support.
