Serving Up a Win

On Tuesday, October 20, West varsity girls volleyball conquered the Leuzinger Olympians over the course of three games at Leuzinger High School in Lawndale.

The girls won all three games. The scores of the games were 25-15, 25-13, and 25-12.

“The part of the game I remember most vividly was Carly getting seven of the points on her serves during the third game,” said Liina Nygren (11). Carly Bosen (12), who usually plays outside, continuously had stellar serves that the opposing team could not keep up with.

“We have really been focusing on combo plays at practice for a while now,” said Jocelyn Lacroix (10), “and they seemed to work out pretty well.”

A combo play is a combination of faster sets to more than one hitter in a play, hoping that the increasing speed of the plays confuses the opposing team. The front row players, which include the spikers who are the ones responsible for hitting the ball over the net, attempted these combination plays and were successful against Leuzinger’s defense.

“We also threw in a few new things like topspin serves and putting people in new positions for a few rotations,” said Lacroix.

According to the score, the girls adjusted well to the new combos and positions. “We hope to use everything we’ve worked on in upcoming games as well,” said Lacroix.

Even though the girls won, there is still always room for improvement. “For our next game, we need to be more focused and have a game plan for every play,” said Nygren. “We also need to continuously encourage each other and work hard at being the best we can be.”

“I was really proud of our varsity girls after their game on Tuesday,” said Jennifer Fuller (11), “we had a good game and didn’t back down.”

Girl’s varsity volleyball would appreciate your support at their next game on October 27 at home against Centennial.
