Varsity field player Leo Garrison (9) handles the ball and scans the pool. West’s loss in last week’s match against Milken Community was largely due to a lack of communication in the pool as well as two dominating players on the opposing team. Warriors vs. Mustang Swim

On Thursday, May 1, 2014, West High’s Swim team took on the Mira Costa Mustangs in a dual meet. The competition took place on Mustang territory with the athletes competing in over 40 events. The the Boys and Girls JV teams competed first, followed by the Varsity team.

The Mustangs defeated West last season and continued to be a tough opponent. Despite the meet not ending the way they hoped, the Warriors were able improve their times and become stronger for the upcoming Prelims. The meet consisted of many individual wins for those on JV and Varsity. Varsity swimmer Christina Ngo (11), won “the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke.”

Although the team did not beat Costa during Thursday’s meet, swimmer Sarah Harb (11) said even though “they beat us, we still had fun [cheering] each other on.” Teammate Sini White (11) said the meet “went well in that many [athletes] were winning and improving [their] times.” The Girls JV and Varsity team have won most of their events in dual meets. “Both our JV and varsity teams kept up with [Costa] even without our top swimmers,” added swimmer Ryo Tamada (12). Even though West did not win Thursday’s meet, the team is still in a strong position to qualify for the Finals on Friday.

Prelims began on Wednesday, May 14, and every school in the league will compete in this particular event. With their talented swimmers and enthusiastic teamwork, these Warriors look forward to dominating the Prelims and advancing to the Finals.
