From a math teacher to a counselor and assistant principal, Mr. Stuckey has done it all. Fortunately, his wide range of experiences led to his position as West High’s new assistant principal.
As assistant principal, Mr. Stuckey’s leadership role is derived from attendance and discipline, creating consequences that “help students grow and hopefully learn from previous mistakes.” He plans to guide students away from making negative decisions before they face harsher consequences within the “adult world.”
Mr. Stuckey is also in charge of overseeing the CTE, Mathematics, and Science departments. He shared his perspective from his previous experiences as a math teacher: “I’ve been in their role . . . I used to do what they do. I know it.” He explained that he could provide proper guidance and support to other faculty members since he has “been in their shoes.”
Mr. Stuckey reminisced about his past as a math teacher and revealed some of his current goals. “I loved bringing creative lessons and activities to my math classes. It’s really unexpected . . . but I love bringing math to life,” he expressed. Through his role in overseeing the Mathematics department, he noted how he wanted to “spread the love of what [he] learned . . . to help direct those same ideas to other students.”
Regarding his previous position as a counselor, Mr. Stuckey elaborated upon how he found himself “being someone that kids felt comfortable talking to.” He understood the stressful and difficult decision-making when preparing for the future and felt he could “make a difference” in students’ lives. He admitted that he “would redo those four years over again if he could”, and by getting to know the students, he planned to make a larger impact in curating a learning environment that aids students in experiencing the same joys that he did.
Throughout his experience at West, Mr. Stuckey expanded on his hopes to know each student by making conscious efforts to be more available. “I’m just trying to see different kids and speak to them.” He hopes to replicate his joyous high school experience through each student. “I just feel like there should be something besides coming to school that you’re looking forward to,” he commented.
In the future, Mr. Stuckey expressed how he wanted to use his areas of expertise to elevate students’ learning experiences. “I felt that I could take what I learned from the classroom and as a counselor, and spread it school-wide”. Through his eighteen years of experience, he hoped that his efforts would gear his knowledge to teachers and students alike. “And I’m excited to really give my part!” he eagerly shared.
Mr. Stuckey also commented that he adored the “different ethnic groups of students around campus.” He elaborated that he loved seeing the array of various groups and backgrounds enjoy each other’s company. “I just find that so cool. I find it even more cool to see them interacting with each other,” he explained.
With Mr. Stuckey’s aim to contribute to West High’s student life by providing a positive learning environment, students can look forward to the bright impacts that Mr. Stuckey will bring to the West High community.
