West High students cheer as they participate in the first rally of the new school year on Friday, September 26, 2022. The Homecoming rally included two student involved games: table surfing and “skin the snake.” In addition, West High’s Dance Department, Drill and All Male performed at the rally, much to the excitement of the student body. To end the rally, the Associated Student Body (ASB) announced the Homecoming Top 5 Court: (Pictured from left to right in middle left row of photos) Ian Chen (12), Beckett Tom (12), Nancy Kim (12), Brandon Howard (12), Lauren Ng (12), Frank Wong (12), John Kang (12), Sullivan Kolakowski (12), Riyana Roy (12), and (not pictured) Jaden Mooney (12).

Excitement is up in the air as we inch closer and closer to West High’s first dance of the year: Homecoming! Students are picking out outfits, finding dates, and the anticipation is growing. Oct. 8 will be a night to remember.

The Top 5 rally took place on Friday, Sept. 23 and class colors filled the stadium. The entire school was decked out in their class colors with vibrant music blasting through the air. As the student body began to take their seats all across the stadium, they were greeted and introduced by the Secretary of Spirit and ASB Council.

The rally was filled with performances: Drill and All Male, the dance team, and of course the Cheer squad. Breanna Corral (11), a dancer on the Drill Team, was super excited to be performing at the rally as she explained that they had initially learned the dance at “Glendale Camp,” a summer dance camp for high school dance teams from all across Southern California. She explained that this specific dance was performed with the dance team, which was why they “had to do a few workshop days so [they] could work on it together.” Overall, Corral’s favorite part of this rally was that the two teams could dance together like one family and have her friends cheer her on from the sidelines.

The rally also included class competition games and the Top 5 Homecoming Nominees. There were 10 people (five boys and five girls) nominated by the entire school to be on the court. One Top 5 nominee was Sullivan Kolakowski (12), photography editor for West Signals newspaper. Kolakowski has been incredibly involved for her four years here at West and felt super humbled and grateful that the school voted her to be in the nominations. Being voted to be on the Homecoming court, she explained, was “A very humbling experience, I was very surprised. Getting voted by everyone in the entire school is a really lucky feeling.”
