On Tuesday, November 8, America watched as we held election for a variety of bills and propositions, senators and representatives, and our 45th president. The race was between the Republican nominee, Donald Trump, the Green Party nominee, Jill Stein, the Libertarian nominee, Gary Johnson, and the Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton.

  For the presidency, the winner of the election was Trump. Trump had 276 electoral votes while Clinton had 218. Natsu Oda (12) said, “Congrats to Donald Trump. Hopefully he will follow through with all the things they claimed would happen.”

  In addition, the legislation passed in California include Proposition 51($9 billion for modernization), Prop 52 (extends existing hospital fee), Prop 55 (extends income tax on earnings over $250,000), Prop 56 (increases taxes on tobacco and e-cigarettes), Prop 57 (parole consideration), Prop 58 (establishment of language programs apart from just English in school), Prop 59 (amendment to overturn Citizens United decision), Prop 63 (background checks for ammunition purchases), Prop 64 (legal recreational marijuana use), Prop 66 (changes procedures in relation to death sentence), and Prop 67 (bans single-use plastic & paper bags).

  The Republican Party also won the majority of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

  Following the announcement, Trump delivered his victory speech saying, “Now it is time for America to bind the wounds of division… To all Republicans and Democrats and Independents across this nation, I say it is time for us to come together as one united people… It was an amazing evening. It’s been an amazing two-year period. And I love this country” (Associated Press).    

  In response to this, Hannah Harrison (11) stated, “I have my own political views, but no matter what, the important thing is that we all support the new president and make sure to succeed as a country together.”

  Regardless of your political views, it is important now that we all follow our new leaders and see where they can take us.
