Iran has purchased multiple weapons from Russia despite the ruling made by the United Nations, barring Iran from taking part in arms-related trade.

  According to Fox News, Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan of Iran met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the arms deals. Dehqan has reportedly attained Russia’s modern Su-30 Flanker fighter jets as well as their T-90 tank, along with other ammunition. This is not only cause for concern considering that these actions allow Iran to possess weapons used in situations of conflict, self-defense, and potential instigations. Another alarming part of this incident is that Dehqan is reportedly the mastermind behind the 1983 Beirut bombing that claimed 220 U.S. Marines and 21 other service members. Brandon Harrison (10) said, “It is definitely risky that someone as dangerous as Dehqan is able to attain these weapons.” Dehqan getting these heavy arms for Iran is unfortunately not the only cause for alarm in this arms deal.

  Seven countries, including the United States and Iran, signed UN Resolution 2231 on July 20th, back in 2015, which clearly states that Iran is barred from all arms-related transfers with all other countries. It is also stated that the other countries in the agreement, China, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Russian Federation, are to take any means necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining arms from transfers. With Iran continuing to make further arms transfers with Russia infringes this United Nations Resolution. As Ashley Hong (12) said, “It’s shocking that Iran is violating a resolution that they agreed to, made by a peacemaking organization, like the United Nations”.

  Furthermore, Russia is now going back on the resolution that it agreed to by consenting to trade with Iran. As Julian Rachman (10) said, “I think the other countries in this deal should obviously follow what they have written and agreed upon.” The other countries in the United Nations Resolution, now excluding Russia, have a choice to take action against Iran infringing the regulations to the agreement.
