Disney with Diversity

Disney Channel is airing a new TV show called Andi Mack, that revolves around an Asian-American family.

The story starts out with a young girl, by the name of Andi, played by Peyton Elizabeth Lee, on her 13th birthday. Her whole life turns around when her older sister, Bex, played by Lilan Bowden, comes back home.

Marianne Yuenger (12) said, “This show is [going to be] pretty cool [since] they have an interracial couple, an Asian and a white parent, [and] I can relate because I am happa. And interracial couples are pretty common now. Disney doesn’t put much focus on Asian families and neither does anyone else really. The only other show I can think of is Fresh off the Boat. So it’s nice to have some fresh Asian representation.”

“There are some heavy topics in [the show] that should help educate people to be not as judgemental towards others. I think it’s great that the show is more focused on serious situations rather than being another Disney sitcom that has all those fake laugh tracks.”

Ian Park (10) also has interests for Disney’s new content. He said, “It’s not the first time that Disney has shown diversity in their shows. Even some of their animated kids shows [and movies] have same-sex characters and other-race Disney princesses in them ex. Moana and Princess and the Frog.”

The first episode of the show has already been released as a pilot and you can view it on YouTube. The full series will being to air on Disney Channel on April 7th.
