Not Your Average Camp

Tyler, the Creator’s annual Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival took place at Exposition Park in Los Angeles from October 28 through October 29. A variety of artists appeared on stage including Kehlani, 6lack, and Migos.

The carnival is hosted by Tyler, the Creator, consisting of carnival rides like the Ferris wheel and the Viking, throwback 80’s arcade games like skeeball, and music performed by over 20 artists.

Nikai Miller (11) also went to Camp Flog Gnaw. He said, “I loved everything about  this event because it had everything you would want like good food, carnival rides, music, exclusive clothes, and free stuff.”

The energy at Camp Flog Gnaw was never low thanks to Tyler; people transitioned from simply head bobbing to moshing, through a series of songs. The audience-engaging performances added to the uplifting vibe.

During the 8:20 P.M. performance, Tyler introduced special guest, Mac Demarco. Later, he went on stage with Thundercat who set the mood of the camp with a jam session.

Rebekah Brownfield (11), who attended the festival, said, “The people were different from every aspect, but we were all connected by the music…  The music was the best part of the concert, the artist brought out a lot of his friends and all 50,000 of us were singing and dancing along with them.”

The second day, Tyler introduced two new surprise guest rappers Ty Dolla $ign and YG. Along with that, a highlight was Playboi Carti’s performance. Carti rapped his hit song “Magnolia,” and during his performance of “Yah Mean,” the audience began to climb and hang from trees.

The two-day festival ended with Kid Cudi. Despite the tough year, Cudi launched his performance with Travis Scott’s “Baptized in Fire.” Then, he gave a personal address to the audience: it will get better with time for those who are struggling.

Bryan Souice (12) could not make it to Camp Flog Gnaw, but he said, “I really love Tyler. I listen to his music all the time. I’m so upset that I couldn’t make it to Camp Flog Gnaw.”

Apart from the carnival, Tyler continues with his success in entrepreneurship: on October 28, he opened up his new GOLF store in Fairfax, CA. The store includes an indoor skate bowl as well as all his new merchandise.
