Skwad in DC

Fans of DC Comics raved for months when announcement of villain-meets-villain movie, Suicide Squad, surfaced back in 2014. The film hit theatres this month with high hopes, however after its initial release it scored 26% on Rotten Tomatoes. Somehow, the film destroyed the box office, grossing $133 million. Not only did it surpass Marvel’s high rated film, Deadpool, by a half a million, but it also scored high with the fans despite the poor critic reviews.

Suicide Squad is the third installment in the DC Extended Universe with its predecessors being Man of Steel (2013) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). The film is about a secret government agency taking in nine of the most dangerous villains in an attempt for them to save the world from a catastrophic threat from a supernatural being. A small bomb is embedded into each member’s neck with the ability to go off at any moment if one tries to rebel. Hence the crew’s title of “Suicide Squad.” The movie appealed to fans a lot more than its forerunners not because of the story it told but for its gorgeous actors.

According to Madelynn Robison (11), “The movie was very well casted. You have movie gods like Will Smith and incoming actresses like, [model] Cara Delevingne and, [martial arts champion] Karen Fukuhara coming together in a big blockbuster film. I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen or else I would miss each person’s perfection.” The cast also features Jai Courtney, who is known for his work in the Divergent series, Joel Kinnaman, Jay Hernandez, and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman, Jared Leto.

Similar to Robison, Forbes contributor, Erik Kain enjoyed Suicide Squad’s “central conceit” the most. This happened to be “the cast of villains.” Kain said the film had, “a terrific cast, lots of humor, and some great action [making] this film a ton of fun from start to finish.” So what was the bad?

Many critics said that the movie had no plot. However it did. The plot was disorganized and jumbled, especially the scenes that had Delevingne in it, but it was definitely in there. Many said that even with a great cast, Margot Robbie who portrayed Harley Quinn, was the only actor who delivered a great performance. Robert Liefeld, creator of Deadpool, said, “Robbie [was] the only performance worth a d*mn in [the movie]. Give her a solo film!”

Despite its poor reviews, Suicide Squad smashed it in the box office as well as in the fans’ hearts. It had humor, diverse cast, and youth appeal. It had its good sides and bad sides and ugly, but doesn’t every movie?

Suicide Squad is in theatres nationwide. Go watch and see if you agree with the critics!
