Lockers Based On Seniority: Yay or Nay?

Students are forced to use the same lockers for the entire duration of their high school years which often frustrates students with bottom or corner lockers. The lockers should be assigned based on seniority rather than giving the graduating seniors’ lockers to the incoming freshmen.

Lockers are an essential part of school because they store textbooks that are required to succeed in class. Lockers are passed down randomly. Gary Thom, the maintenance staff stated, “The freshmen get wherever there’s an empty senior locker from last year. There are some exceptions.”

For each grade, there is a mixture of students with top, middle, and bottom lockers, but seniority should be accounted for the choice in the locker location because of the students’ time spent in school. Katherine Duan (10) said, “… seniors who have had bottom lockers for many years deserve to choose.” Similarly, Victoria Hyun (11) stated, “I think upper classmen should get more privileges.”

However, William Ingold (12) said, “It would be nice but difficult [if the lockers placement was based on seniority] because students would need to remember their new locker locations and combinations.” Large portions of the student population usually forget locker combinations over the summer, so remembering a new one should not be difficult.

The ability to choose lockers will benefit the upperclassmen by providing comfort and ease to their school days. Locker choices should be based on seniority because the upperclassmen deserve more recognition for their experience in high school.
