A picture of an egg beat Kylie Jenner’s world record for the most liked Instagram post in only nine days. The viral photo was posted on Instagram on January 4th and has amassed over 30 million likes.
Jenner previously held the title with a picture of her newborn daughter, Stormi Webster, that was posted on February 6th, 2018. The photo of the brown egg was posted by an anonymous user on January 4th with the caption, “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this.”
The owner of the account addressed his followers as the #EggGang and urged them to help the picture reach its goal. Riya Thakre (10) joined in on the mission and commented, “It was such an innovative idea. I’m glad that it beat Kylie Jenner’s picture and that we all united to complete the goal in such a short time.”
The day the egg surpassed Jenner’s record, it accumulated 30.4 million likes the same afternoon. The account was verified shortly after reaching 3 million followers.
The unidentified owner posted on Instagram stories, “This is madness. What a time to be alive. Thank you so much for all of your support and messages. I’m gonna try and get back to as many of you as possible. But for now, I need to sleep. It doesn’t end here though, we’re only just getting started. #EggGang Mic drop.”
Viewers of the picture are curious to find out the person behind the famous photo but have had no luck. Uzair Pasta(11) is also inquisitive and said, “I wish we knew more about the person behind the egg photo. The fact that an anonymous user gained so much traction for a plain picture of an egg makes the whole thing better.”
Kylie Jenner also addressed her defeated record by poking fun at herself and posting an old video of her trying to make a fried egg on hot concrete. She captioned it, “Take that little egg.”
Other accounts began imitating the egg with photos of a potato, avocado, lettuce, or other ordinary foods. These accounts aimed to break the egg’s record, but have had no success so far.
It will take millions of likes and an appealing approach for someone to break the record of the anonymous person behind the egg account. Followers are still wondering if they will ever get to see the owner of the account.
There is speculation that merchandise will be dropping soon by the unidentified owner. People hope to find out what the leader of the #EggGang plans to do next with their newfound fame.
