And the Billboard Award Goes to…

Thousands of music and entertainment lovers tuned in on Sunday night to watch the annual Billboard Music Awards. This year, the ceremony was held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on May 22. The show featured acts and appearances from various popular artists such as Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Rihanna, and more. The award show recognized music’s biggest icons over the past year while paying tribute to the one and only Prince.

The Billboard Music Awards is known for acknowledging music’s biggest artists at the moment as well as displaying many stylish… and cringe-worthy… looks that walk down the red carpet. Some of the best looks that emerged from the star-studded event were Zendayas peach two-piece top and skirt and Shawn Mendes in an all black Balenciaga suit.

Hannah Schafer (9) “absolutely [loves] Zendaya. [She] loves how inspiring, stylish, and talented Z is.” Wiz Khalifa’s laid back white top, brown pants, completed with crisp white Converse got him voted “best dressed man of the night” according to wonderwall.com.

Some not-so-fashionable ensembles were presented by Nick Jonas for his clashing patterns, Z Lala who chose to wear a caged dress, and Tove Lo who appeared in an orange crochet-style fabric. Nevertheless, the night dazzled on with many performances from the hottest stars in the music world.

The highs and lows of the award show included various performances and speeches. A music video debut from Adele was also shown and she was also presented with a win for Top Billboard 200. Unfortunately, the pop singer was unable to make the event. Savannah Hopkins (10) thought that Adele rightfully “deserved her win for Top Billboard Album…[because] she is such a great singer and had an awesome comeback.”

The crowd appreciated the wonderful cover of Bob Dylan sung by Kesha and held back tears when Celine Dion dedicated her rendition of Queen’s “The Show Must Go On” to her late husband Rene Angelil. According to rollingstone.com, Ludacris’ cheesy commentary  and “attempted…[jokes] that fell flat” gave the event the typical awkward laughter that every award show seems to possess. Winners from the event included Justin Bieber for Top Male Artist and Fetty Wap for Best New Artist.

The night ended with a moving tribute to Prince from Madonna and Stevie Wonder which received tearful eyes and a standing ovation from the audience. The power-anthem “Purple Rain” ended the night on a sad, but nostalgic note..
