Once on This Island Hits Our Scarlata Theatre

Carly Saber, Entertainment Editor

West High’s fall musical this year is Once On This Island. Play Production has worked hard for close to two months putting together this wonderful show.

The story revolves around an island’s inhabitants are divided into two classes: peasants and Grand Hommes.  One peasant, Ti Moune, played by Lizette David (12), is a special girl saved by the Gods. Her love interest, Daniel (Ty Koeller (11)) is a Grand Homme who lives a much different life than that of Ti Moune.

In her first lead role, David beautifully displays her talented voice and wide range. She expressed, “I am most excited for people to see our class perform the songs because we have each worked really hard to make a connection with them.” Throughout the show, each actor effectively communicates the story and their emotions, which is extremely important since the musical is being held in the cramped Scarlata Theatre.

Jennifer McClinton (11) and Garrett Miller (12) portray Ti Moune’s loving parents, who deliver one of the most heartfelt songs of the evening. The Gods of Earth, Water, Love, and Death are portrayed by Xia Rashid (12), Alex Madrid (12), Asuka Watanabe (11), Daniel Barrett (11) respectively. Each lead holds their own with their strong voices and convincing acting skills. The set, built by our own janitor Gary Thon, looks intricately gorgeous.

Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Seating is limited so be sure to buy them in advance! The show runs Wednesday November 28, Thursday November 29, Friday November 30, and Saturday Decemeber 1 at 7:00. There is also a 3:30 matinee on Thursday November 29.
